Roy #1

Roy 1 was the first creation by Roy Audio.

The inspiration for these speakers dates to an article in How Stuff Works. These were created with Audax woofers, and tweeters from Madisound. These speakers were created without any power tools, or any form of sophisticated software; generally speaking, they were a neophyte’s first poke in the dark. The sound from these speakers reminds one of entry level JMlab speakers. This project was completed as a result of curiosity as well as the need to blast sound for a debate tournament.

When they were put to the test, these speakers were impressive by their sheer output. With only 4 inch woofers, these speakers managed to fill an entire gymnasium with the debate teams annoying, eclectic taste in music.

Crossover Design

A quick crossover calculator came up with an arbitrary first order crossover. A .2mH inductor on the woofers was a first order low pass slope; this, of course, was woefully inadequate due to the rising impedance at higher frequencies for the woofer. The tweeter had a 10uF capacitor with an L-pad, which did absolutely nothing to reduce its level. Thus, the speakers were quite bright and yet sounded pleasurable with the proper material; this certainly made them grab attention. They didn't sound too good to me although many of my friends wanted me to build them a pair of speakers. They played incredibly loud with just 6 watts of power.

Roy Audio amplifierThe graph to the left is a frequency graph of this speaker. It illustrates how the crossovers are not adequate, yet compared to the traditional low-fidelity speaker most people are used to, these are a considerable improvement. The nonlinear distortion is far lower than most mass-marketed consumer speakers despite the tweeter distortion being rather high.
